The Australian Drug and Cosmetics Commission (ADC) has approved the first new prescription drug for erectile dysfunction (ED) for the Australian market.

Drugs containing sildenafil citrate, the main ingredient in the branded Viagra and the main ingredient in the non-branded generic Viagra, will be able to be sold over-the-counter (Nozoc 20 mg, sildenafil citrate sildenafil) and exclusively in pharmacies.

The first new prescription drug for ED will be available over-the-counter in pharmacies next month.

The launch is in response to a series of reported incidents in which a single tablet of the erectile dysfunction medicine, Viagra Connect 50mg, was administered to patients with ED in the weeks following a drug safety review. The safety review was conducted in patients with moderate to severe erectile dysfunction, and in those with other medical conditions, including benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and and urinary symptoms associated with erectile dysfunction.

In one of the most reported instances in drug safety reviews, a male patient with mild to moderate pulmonary hypertension was treated with sildenafil citrate for 4 weeks and, following a second drug safety review, a second dose of sildenafil citrate was administered, resulting in an increase in the maximum dose and duration of treatment. The new drug application (DOA) is now under review for several potential reasons including the safety information contained on the package, sildenafil citrate, and the potential for sildenafil to increase the risk of sudden death in patients with ED.

Drug safety studies conducted in the UK, Australia and New Zealand showed sildenafil increases the risk of sudden death in patients with ED compared to the general population. The highest reported rate of sudden death was in patients who had been treated for 4 weeks, and the highest reported rate of sudden death was in those who had been treated for 3 to 4 weeks.

The new drug application will apply to pharmacies and NABP Australia for prescription, NOS and OTC versions of the following medicines:

  • Viagra Connect 50mg: A new oral treatment for erectile dysfunction
  • Viagra Connect 100mg: A new oral treatment for men with ED who have not responded to other treatments
  • Viagra Connect 50mg and 100mg: A new oral treatment for ED in a couple of hours
  • Viagra Connect 100mg: A new treatment for ED in a couple of hours
  • Viagra Connect 50mg: A treatment for ED in a couple of hours

Erectile Dysfunction (ED), a condition characterized by an erection or dysfunction in the sexual ability of a man, is often overlooked as a contributing factor to dating problems and is often under-recognized. However, in the past few years, a growing number of individuals (especially men) have experienced difficulties in their erection, including difficulty achieving orgasm, premature ejaculation, delayed or stopping orgasms, and/or/but for too long. Even after starting treatment, there is still a paucity of research documenting the full extent of erectile dysfunction a person has with subsequent complications. The quest to understand this condition has led to a plethora of investigation and treatment options, including medications and lifestyle changes. This condition often leads to a reduced quality of life, impacting individuals' overall happiness and relationships. Fortunately, available treatment options have given rise to the management of erectile dysfunction, allowing many to regain control and enjoy a more fulfilling sex life. However, the question is whether the improved blood flow to the penis can lead to a successful erection with subsequent satisfactory sexual experiences.

Individuals with certain medical conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases, have been reported to be more sensitive to medication. This medication can primarily treat erectile dysfunction with a combination of drugs designed to enhance blood flow and potentially improve a man's erectile function.
